RYA Cruising Instructor – Power

£1325

The RYA 4 day Cruising Instructor course is designed to develop the skills necessary for a experienced Yachtmaster Offshore Power to become an RYA Cruising Instructor Power.

A Cruising Instructor is a very competent boat handler above Yachtmaster Offshore with a very good, in depth, level of theory knowledge with  a pleasant manner.

For entry to the course you must of course be an experienced Yachtmaster Offshore (Power) with an in date Commercial Endorsement. To become an Instructor you will need to demonstrate a level above what you showed on your RYA Yachtmaster Exam, together with some style and panache on the teaching side. You need to understand not only how the boat moves, but how to put this across to a student. The most important part of any teaching is to give the students the ‘key’ part – ‘How to improve’ this takes good observation and excellent feedback. You should be fully familiar with the level of the syllabus of the Helmsman course and Day Skipper Course and have a good level of theory knowledge above the level at which you need to teach. The course needs three persons to run as stipulated by the RYA.

We generally schedule a practical boat handling opportunity the day before the course.  4 – 5 hours costs £650.  Maximum 2 people – if 2 book then can be completed as a whole day  click here for details and booking.

There is a requirement to complete an online pre-course assessment before the course.  Log on details will be sent on receipt of booking and payment.  Information on this course can be sent on request.

Recommended reading

RYA yachtmaster syllabus + logbook (G158) RYA Dayskipper Handbook – Motor (G97) RYA Yachtmaster Scheme Instructor Handbook (G27) RYA Shorebased Notes (SBS)

Validity

The qualification is valid for five years. After 5 years the RYA Cruising Instructor Power must either be re-tested, centrally by the RYA or preferably take a Yachtmaster Instructor Qualifying Course with the RYA.  Instructors over 70 will need to revalidate every two years.

Assessment

The course is moderated on the last day and the course is about teaching you how to teach and debrief other students. The trainer will show you the soft skills required. Those who have experience of instructing in other disciplines will find that some of that experience is relevant, however a good Motor Cruising instructor is, without exception, a good skipper first and foremost.

During your course you will learn how to teach and you will practice instructing. You will need a good understanding of your subject and be confident that you are able to demonstrate all the boat handling skills in the RYA Day Skipper Course.
