RYA Powerboat Level 1

A one day course providing a practical introduction to boat handling and Safety in powerboats.

Many students go straight on to Level 2, this is perfectly ok for beginners, but we would recommend an RYA Powerboat Level 1 as a natural start for the more hesitant. How can I take this course?

  • On our school boat on our timetables.
  • On our school boat, in your group, you choose the dates.
  • On your own boat, we come to you.

Minimum duration 1 day
Minimum age 8 years (8 – 11 years & 12 – 16 endorsed certificate)
Course content Preparation: launching and recovery, safety equipment, pre-start checks, personal buoyancy. Boat handling and manoeuvres: starting and stopping, use of kill cord, steering controls, securing to a buoy, leaving and coming alongside, being towed. Theory and background: IRPCS, ropework, awareness of other water users.

The certificate for 8-11 year olds will be endorsed as follows: “The holder should only use a powered craft under the supervision of a responsible adult on board the craft.” The certificate for 12 – 16 year olds will be endorsed as follows: “The holder should only use a powered craft under the supervision of a responsible adult.”
