By far the most popular RYA Powerboat course in the world. The RYA Powerboat Level 2 is a 2-day course which is the starting place for providing all the skills and background knowledge that you need to go afloat safely.

How can I take this course?

  • On our school boat on our timetables – At Swanwick
  • On our school boat, in your group or 1:1, you choose the dates
  • On your own boat, we come to you

Additionally, successful completion of the Powerboat Level 2 course can also lead to the International Certificate of Competence – ICC, for vessels up to 10 metres.

This practical course is taught on our 7m Highfield Rib, Swiss Too.  The classroom element is taught in the Mendez Marine Office, Hamble River Boat Yard, Swanwick SO31 7EB.

Minimum duration 2 days, Approx. 9.00 – 17.30 each day.

Course content
Preparation: launch and recovery, safety equipment, lines and fenders and fuel tanks. Boat handling and manoeuvres: starting and stopping, use of kill cord, steering controls, securing to a buoy. Boat handling and manoeuvres: effects of current or tide, high and low speed manoeuvring, propeller controls, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside and man overboard. Theory and background: types of craft and engine, maintenance checks, IRPCS (International Regulations for the Prevention of Collision at Sea), weather forecasts and emergency actions.

Ability after the course
To be able to handle a Powerboat in fair weather and daylight hours.

NOTE: the Powerboat level 2 certificate can also be achieved by direct assessment. But this is subject to meeting certain criteria and is by discussion.
