You can enter the Motor Cruising Scheme at any stage subject to your knowledge and experience; there is no need to start at the beginner’s level.
The full details of the scheme can be found in the RYA’s publication “Motor Cruising & Yachtmaster® Scheme”. RYA publication G158 14.
If you are unsure which course is the correct one for you then we suggest you call us to discuss your experience and we can then advise what course would best suit you. Learn on your Boat
We actively encourage clients to enjoy tuition on their own boat if they already have one. We appreciate the investment you have made, so be it a RIB or a 23 metre Fly Bridge Motor cruiser, and anything in between, our aim is to help you enjoy your boat by becoming more confident and safe.

RYA Start Motorcruising
The RYA Start Motor Cruising course is ideal for introducing younger friends or family members to crewing a motor boat, and for giving them an understanding of how they can assist the helm. It can be delivered either as a one-day stand alone course or as a two-day course when accompanying another motor cruising course.

RYA Helmsman
The RYA Helmsman course is ideal for new boaters, teaching basic boat handling techniques and general marine awareness for those conscious of the difficulty and hazards of boat handling. The Helmsman course is useful for crews as well as skippers. Apart from the obvious safety benefits of extra boat handlers on board, it adds interest if everyone can contribute to the trip.

RYA Dayskipper Practical
The RYA Day Skipper practical motor course is four days long making it the best course for those new, or with a little experience of motor cruising and wishing to Skipper their own motor cruiser. This RYA training course is designed to consolidate what you learned on the RYA Day Skipper Theory Course by offering practical application for what you need to know to safely navigate a motor cruiser in local waters berthing in marinas or anchorages in secluded spots.

RYA Coastal Skipper practical
The RYA Coastal Skipper practical course is for RYA Day Skipper level skippers who want to improve their skills, take charge and learn to make full use of the boat on longer, more complex passages. An important aspect of this RYA Coastal Skipper course is learning to take command and made decisions resulting in relaxed, well-planned passages and a happy crew.

RYA Yachtmaster Power - Exam Prep
The preparation part of the week is intended to act as a refresher on pilotage, boat handling, safety, skippering and passage planning. In particular, skills like blind navigation, electronic navigation (radar and GPS), night pilotage and MOB procedure are considered. During the exam, candidates will be set tasks to demonstrate their ability as a Yachtmaster and can be asked questions on any part of the syllabus for all practical and shorebased courses up to Yachtmaster level.

RYA Day Skipper Practical PLUS Theory
The RYA Day Skipper practical course requires you to have theory knowledge up to RYA Day Skipper level. However you don’t have to have the RYA Day Skipper theory qualification unless you are looking to commercially endorse the certificate.
