Classroom Based: 7 days

The RYA Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster theory course is an advanced course that builds on the knowledge gained on the shorebased RYA Day Skipper theory course. It is aimed at sailors and motor boaters who are looking to undertake more complex passages perhaps offshore or at night. This course is a must for those looking to work towards taking the RYA Advanced Powerboat, RYA Coastal Skipper or RYA Yachtmaster® Coastal / Offshore practical exams.

Click here to view the full Syllabus.

It is an intensive course so we have added an additional day.  There are opportunities to study in a 7 day block or split into two parts to enable students to consolidate their learning.

The course covers advanced navigation techniques including – position fixing, course shaping and plotting, tidal knowledge including secondary port calculations, navigation in restricted visibility, Admiralty publications and electronic position finding equipment. The meteorology tuition includes the taking and interpretation of forecasts, plotting of weather systems and weather prediction. Students are shown how to use this information when planning and executing passage plans. The International Regulations for Prevention of Collision at Sea are dealt with in detail and you will also learn more about yacht stability and safety offshore.

It is strongly recommended that students have a good grasp of theory subjects to RYA Day Skipper standard and have thoroughly revised the Collision Regulations before attending.

During the course students sit three exams and on passing will be awarded the RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster® Theory Certificate.

At Mendez Marine we believe in small classes, maximum 5 so that students get the optimum of input from the Instructor to ensure that they have full grasp of the knowledge by the end of the course.  As a power school we are able to teach the theory syllabus with a power slant to ensure that your learning is more relevant to your practical experiences.

Whilst we don’t always advertise dates for Theory courses we are able to schedule the week before a RYA Yachtmaster® Prep course to ensure your knowledge is fresh for the course. if the dates listed are not suitable for you or you wish to have a course run at a location of your choice we are happy to arrange bespoke courses. Please call us if you would like more information about these options.
