Classroom Based: 6 Days
The RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster® Theory course is an advanced programme that builds on the knowledge gained in the shorebased RYA Day Skipper Theory course. It is designed for sailors and motorboaters preparing to undertake more demanding passages, whether offshore or at night. This is an essential step for anyone working towards the RYA Advanced Powerboat, RYA Coastal Skipper, or RYA Yachtmaster® Coastal/Offshore practical exams.
This is an intensive course, and to give students the best chance of success we have extended it to 6 full days (with an optional 7-day block or split sessions to allow time for consolidation).
The course covers advanced navigation techniques, including:
Position fixing, course shaping and plotting
Tidal knowledge, including secondary port calculations
Navigation in restricted visibility
Admiralty publications and use of electronic position-finding equipment
Meteorology is explored in depth, covering forecast interpretation, plotting of weather systems, and weather prediction to support safe passage planning. Students also cover the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collision at Sea in detail, as well as yacht stability and offshore safety.
It is strongly recommended that students arrive with a solid understanding of Day Skipper theory and a good revision of the Collision Regulations.
Throughout the course, students will sit three exams, and successful candidates will be awarded the RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster® Theory Certificate.
At Mendez Marine, we keep our classes deliberately small — capped at just 4 students. While our courses may be more expensive than at some centres, most of whom run with 8–10 students per class, our focus is on providing far greater instructor attention and ensuring each student fully grasps the material. We believe this tailored approach delivers the best learning experience and outcome.
As a power-focused school, we also deliver the theory syllabus with a practical powerboat emphasis, making it directly relevant to your real-world experience.
Although we don’t always publish theory course dates, we can often schedule them in the week leading up to an RYA Yachtmaster® Prep course, keeping your knowledge fresh. We are also happy to arrange bespoke training at alternative dates or locations. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
