Mendez Marine have teamed up with Hamble School of Yachting to deliver the RYA Sea Survival Courses.
The RYA Sea Survival course is designed to provide the participant with a basic understanding of what to do in an emergency at sea. It is a well-proven fact that, in the event of an emergency at sea, people with training are more likely to survive.
It is not only EDUCATIONAL, but GREAT FUN and will raise your awareness of the value of being prepared in the event that unthinkable happens.
Liferafts, the equipment they contain and survival techniques form the central part of the RYA Sea Survival course. You will be taught about how to launch rafts, what the initial and subsequent actions in a raft are and receive some sound advice on longer term survival. Other topics covered include the design of lifejackets, hypothermia and Search and Rescue techniques.
This qualification is an essential part of the RYA/ISAF Offshore Safety Course and is also required for those seeking commercial endorsements on a Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence qualification.
The RYA Sea Survival course includes a two hour practical session in a pool and students are encouraged to bring along their own wet weather gear and lifejacket, however this is provided if needed. The reason we ask you to wear the real kit is in order to experience first hand the problems of entering and assisting the entrance of others, into an inflated and uncooperative liferaft whilst fully kitted out. This is a really hands on course that is taught by an experienced Sea Survival instructor.
|Minimum duration||1 day, 09:00 to 17:30, includes 2 hour practical session in the pool at Hamble School|
|Student:Instructor Ratio||Maximum 16 :1. Maximum number of students must not exceed twice the liferaft capacity.|
|Course materials||Sea Survival Handbook|
|Recommended resources||E-G103 Boat Safety Handbook|
You will need old clothing like a tracksuit etc (not jeans) to wear in the water, and a towel. You may bring your own waterproofs and footwear, but these must be clean.
If you have your own lifejacket then this might be a good time to test it. Re-arming kits can be purchased locally.
The course is classroom and pool based requiring a degree physical ability, please contact us with any questions.
Please note all our RYA Sea survival courses are run in association with Hamble School of Yachting, Mercury Yacht Harbour, Satchell Lane, Hamble, Southampton SO31 4HQ.
