RYA Shorebased Courses
Classroom based theory navigation classes are a great way to learn the essential building blocks of successfully skippering a boat, be it sail or power.
- RYA Day Skipper Theory – 5 days or 2.5 weekends. A comprehensive introduction to navigation theory for inexperienced skippers.
- RYA Coastal Yachtmaster® Theory – 6 days or 3 weekends. Advanced training for more experienced skippers building on the Day Skipper course
We pride ourselves on small class sizes – minimum 2 maximum of 6 – so you get lots of student:instructor access.
The RYA Support courses (usually 1 day) cover a range of different subjects designed to help your grow your knowledge in specialist areas.
Courses will be held in our Classroom in Deacons Marina, Bridge Road, Bursledon SO31 8AZ. There is free parking at the Marina but if busy then you can park at Bursledon Train Station (SO31 8AA) a 5 minute walk away.

RYA VHF Radio Classroom + Exam
The RYA VHF Radio Classroom Course is for anyone who owns a fixed or hand-held marine VHF radio. The Short Range Certificate is the qualification required, by law, if you operate a VHF radio fitted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on any British vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio.

RYA Sea Survival
If the worst ever happened at sea and you had to abandon your boat, would you know what to do? The RYA MCA Sea Survival training course assumes the worst case scenario: that you have to abandon your yacht or ship.

RYA Radar +
RYA Radar+ course gives you an understanding of radar as an aid to navigation and collision avoidance. This 2 day course give you the opportunity to convert what you have plotted on paper and ‘see’ it on our Radar / Navigation simulator. You have plotted on paper now convert it to electronic collision avoidance and using Radar as an aid to navigation.

RYA First Aid
This RYA First Aid one-day course covers all the usual first aid subjects – including the H&S requirements (1981) for Emergency first aid at Work – but covers accidents and emergencies from a boating perspective as well

RYA Diesel Engine
The RYA Diesel Engine is a one-day beginners course to help you prevent and solve diesel engine failure. Mechanical failure is the main cause of rescue call-outs to cruisers. Basic maintenance and engine care will help ensure that you are not part of this statistic.

RYA Radar
The RYA Radar course gives you an understanding of radar as an aid to navigation and collision avoidance. Find out how to use radar to help navigation not just using it to see what’s there. Radar can help in so many way that you may not know.

RYA VHF Radio Exam
The exam takes the form of a written check paper, and then a spoken test to confirm that you can operate a VHF correctly. It’s not hard and can be just viewed of confirmation of the learning that you have done so far. It normally takes a maximum of 90 minutes.

RYA Day Skipper Theory
The RYA Day Skipper theory course is a prelude to the practical RYA Day Skipper Course and equips the aspiring skipper with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. This theory course also recommended for students following the RYA Powerboat scheme and should be taken leading unto an RYA Intermediate Powerboat course.

RYA Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster Theory
The RYA Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster theory course is an advanced course that builds on the knowledge gained on the shorebased RYA Day Skipper theory course. It is aimed at sailors and motor boaters who are looking to undertake more complex passages perhaps offshore or at night

RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Theory
The RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Theory course, or Astro Navigation, is the first stage in obtaining the prestigious RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence. This course is equally suited to those that aspire to blue water cruising or who just want to learn traditional navigation. The course will equip you with the necessary theoretical skills to carry out an ocean passage as mate or skipper.

RYA Yachtmaster (Theory) Refresher
This, non-certificated course is for students who have previously passed a classroom or online RYA Yachtmaster Theory course. This course aim’s to refresh RYA Yachtmaster theory knowledge and techniques that prospective RYA Yachtmaster, RYA Yachtmaster Cruising Instructors and RYA Yachtmaster Instructor candidates could benefit from
