Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence – Prep and Exam

This course is for people who wish to become a Commercial Powerboat Skipper enabling you to skipper a, relevant, craft day and night up to 20 miles from a safe haven.

Preparation day: Boat handling skills assessment and ‘polish’: day and night exercises. Revision of key theory; secondary ports, tidal heights and rates, collision regulations, night lights and shapes, sound signals. It is an intensive program of instructor led revision which will prepare you specifically for the exam.

Exam: 1 candidate: 4 to 5 hours, 2 candidates: 5 to 6 hours, 3 candidates: 6 to 7 hours. No more than three candidates can be examined in one session. Exam fee £208.  Click here for the Exam syllabus.

Commercial Endorsement: To endorse the RYA Advanced Powerboat Certificate you will also need: RYA Sea Survival certificate, RYA VHF Radio Operators License, RYA PPR certificate, First Aid certificate as well as an ML5 medical from your doctor, click here for information.

NB.  If you have completed a CoC for your RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore Power you do not need to take the CoC for the Advanced Powerboat.

NB. We only offer a CoC between September and April due to the night exercises.

If you only want to take the exam the cost is:
£250 + £208 exam fee (if only 1 on exam then there will be a £50 additional charge for fuel – payable on the day)

Pre-course experience Candidates will ideally hold the RYA Advanced Powerboat Certificate
Assumed knowledge Candidates should have a thorough knowledge of navigation and chart work to the level of Coastal/Yachtmaster shore based
Certification required

  • A GMDSS compliant Marine Radio Operator’s Certificate such as the RYA Short Range Certificate or higher.
  • An RYA First Aid Certificate or another valid first aid certificate, as detailed on the RYA website.
  • Advanced Powerboat course completion certificate ONLY IF claiming reduced sea time detailed above.
Duration 2 days: day 1 – 10am – 8pm (or later depending on time of year, Day 2 Exam day  
Minimum sea time

  • 30 days at sea, which may be reduced to 20 days at sea if an RYA Advanced Powerboat course completion certificate is held;
  • 2 days as skipper;
  • 800 miles, which may be reduced to 400 miles if an RYA Advanced Powerboat Course completion certificate is held;
  • 12 night hours.
Minimum age 17 years
Maximum student. : Instructor Ratio 3 : 1
