SCV Coding

SCV Commercial Vessel Coding

SCV – a guide

Small Commercial Vessel (SCV) Coding is a legal requirement for a vessel of up to 24m (80′) in length wishing to operate commercially. This allows the vessel to carry up to 12 passengers, or for any operations with financial gain to the owner. The SCV Code is upheld by the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) and is for British flagged vessels only.

Why code your vessel?

These are some of the reason for ‘coding’ your boat.

You may reclaim duty on all items for the boat intended for commercial use, for example:

  • You may be entitled to reclaim the VAT paid if you paid VAT on your purchase
  • Berthing fees
  • Insurance
  • Maintenance
  • Equipment purchased.
  • VAT on Fuel used.
  • Excise duty on fuel, used for commercial purposes.
  • Your vessel will be operating with a higher safety standard due to the mandatory equipment and changes required by the code.

What happens?

Whether your vessel is new or pre-owned for the SCV coding we can organise everything from the paperwork to attending with the surveyor and completing the coding. All work is carried out by skilled craftsmen. This will include:

  • All paperwork relating to the SCV1, SCV2, stability category allocation and the issuing of the stability book.
  • Stability test with full loading.
  • Complete the required training manual, which is specific to your vessel.
  • Fit all signage required as discreetly as possible.
  • Organise and oversee any changes to any work required on the mechanics, electrics or boat modifications.
  • Order, Stow or fit all required safety equipment.
  • Liaise and meet with the Surveyor for all necessary inspections.
