Our theory courses are split into four groups:
- Online theory courses – as the name suggests the following courses can be taken in comfort anywhere you wish with internet access. Courses available are: RYA VHF DSC Radio, PPR Professional Practice and Responsibilities, CEVNI test for Inland waterways, RYA Essential Navigation, RYA Online Day Skipper, Coastal / Yachtmaster® and Ocean Yachtmaster® courses. NB if you want to commercially endorse your Day skipper or Yachtmaster® qualification you will need to arrange to have your on-line exam adjudicated. This can be arranged at the Mendez Marine office for a small fee.
- Classroom based theory courses: those available are RYA Essential Navigation, Day Skipper, Coastal / Yachtmaster® and Ocean Yachtmaster® courses, based here or at Hamble School of Yachting. Classroom Courses allow you to learn with other students and under the guidance of a qualified shore based instructor.
- One Day classroom support course such as: First Aid, VHF / DSC Radio, Diesel Engine Maintenance, Sea Survival and Radar.
- The MCA STCW 95 basic training consists of 4 elements: Personal Survival Techniques (STCW95 Reg VI/1 Section A-VI/1 para 2.1.1) – 1 day, Fire Fighting & Fire Prevention (STCW95 Reg VI/1 Section A-VI/1 para 2.1.2) – 2 days, Elementary First Aid (STCW95 Reg VI/1 Section A-VI/1 para 2.1.3) – 1 day, Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (STCW95 Reg VI/1 Section A-VI/1 para 2.1.4) – 1 day.
Classroom courses held at Mendez Marine are more expensive per person than our competitors as we limit classroom numbers to 4 to ensure that students receive the maximum support from the instructor with the opportunity to focus on individual areas of weakness and learning styles. Having a solid foundation in theory will ensure that you will have the best learning experience when you move on to your practical boat handling courses.
