RYA Tuition

Many owners wish to make better use of their vessel. As an RYA Training Centre we are able to offer the full range of Motorcruising, Powerboat, Personal Watercraft and Shorebased Courses. We offer competitive rates and our highly experienced instructors regularly travel all over Europe. A price list is shown, however it is often simpler to call and discuss your individual requirements

Own Boat Tuition

Formal certified training alone does not always cover what you require. We specialise in offering training and advice suited to your needs, whether it be close quarters boat handling, navigation, all types of electronics, or even assistance on your first passage further afield. Additionally you benefit from a better understanding of your crafts systems and handling characteristics. You get the benefit of specialised tuition with your regular crew, family or even one to one.

Powerboat Courses

Level 1 Basic introduction to Powerboating Duration 1 Day

Level 2 Skills and background knowledge to be a competent Powerboat Skipper. Basis for the International Certificate of Competence up to 10m. Duration 2 Days

Intermediate Practical use of pilotage and passage planning by day on coastal waters. A progression from Level 2 Duration 2 Days

Advanced Provides the skills and background knowledge needed for operating by day and night. Duration 2 Days + 1 Night exercise

Motorcruising Courses

Helmsman Practical Course

Ideal preparation for the new owner, the course covers basic boat handling, engine checks and safety in familiar waters. Duration 2 Days

International Certificate of Competence

Practical and theory for the International Certificate of Competence for craft up to 24meters in length (UK Passport Holders & Residents only) Duration 3 Days

Day Skipper Practical Motor Cruising (Tidal)

Practical course in tidal waters includes theory course knowledge, pilotage, boat handling, seamanship and navigation, your chance to take charge on short passages with plenty of advice from the instructor. Duration 4 Days.

Coastal Skipper Practical Motor Cruising Course (Tidal)

For the more experienced Skipper the opportunity to improve their skills. Skippered passages by each of the trainees in a whole variety of situations. Practical application safety, passage planning, pilotage by day and night, boat handling and emergency situations. Duration 5 Days

Advanced Powerboat, Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster® Exams

Considering trying for your Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster® Exam? We also provide a ‘preparation for exam service’; run by one of our Yachtmaster® Examiners they will design your training around your needs and will cover most theory and practical aspects of the exam syllabus, ensuring that you have the best possible preparation and practise to have the best chance of success.

Shorebased Theory Courses.

RYA Basic Navigation - NEW

This new addition to the RYA shorebased courses, the Basic Navigation course is taken over 2 days and is designed to give a greater understaning of the art of navigation while not taking up so much time as doing the more intensive Day Skipper course.

RYA DAYSKIPPER

This course is aimed at the complete beginner or those with some sailing or motor cruising experience who have not previously taken a shore-based course. It is the advised course for everyone to take before committing themselves to the Practical RYA course. The subjects covered will include: Charts and Navigation Instruments, Buoys and Channel Markers; Tides and Depths of Water, Electronic Chart Plotters, Weather at Sea and the Basic Collision Rules

RYA COASTAL SKIPPER/Yachtmaster® OFFSHORE

This course is aimed at the more experienced sailor or motor cruiser building upon the knowledge gained in the Dayskipper course. Many of the topics are similar, but explore subjects in greater depth. Essential knowledge for everyone considering taking the practical RYA Yachtmaster® course. The subjects covered will include: Passage Planning; Identification of Lights and Shapes; Coastal Navigation; Meteorology and Pilotage.

At Mendez Marine we run the Dayskipper course either over six days taken over three alternate weekends, or intensively over five days. Course numbers are small. RYA course pack, lunch, tea and coffee are all included in the fee.

All you need to bring is a pair of dividers and a Portland type plotter. We do not provide these but can order them for you, if you wish, for the start of the course. Hours daily are 0900 - 1700hrs.

RYA 1 Day Sea Survival Course

Will show you how to make the best use of a liferaft and you will learn some basic survival techniques. By the end of this course you will have a good knowledge of survival techniques, the safety equipment carried on small boats and will have spent valuable time doing practical drills in a liferaft.

At our normal south coast base with programmed dates.

We can bring a course to you, if you have a group (Minimum of 4 people) from your boat club, marina or just friends then we can travel to your area and provide a course to suit your schedule.

RYA 1 Day Radar Course

This one-day course with small numbers gives an understanding of the use of Radar in small boats as an aid to navigation and for collision avoidance. This course is intended to equip the yachtsman with sufficient knowledge so that, with practice, he can fulfil the requirements of the Collision Regulations when using Radar in conditions of reduced visibility and learn how to utilise its powers as an aid to navigation. The Course this can be provided ashore or afloat on your craft.

RYA 1 Day Diesel Engine Course

This one-day classroom course is intended to teach awareness of the main systems of a marine diesel engine. Furthermore we look at ways of taking simple measures to prevent mechanical breakdown at sea and rectify defects, which do not require workshop support. A hands on approach is adopted throughout this can be provided ashore or afloat on your craft.

RYA 1 Day SRC Short Range Certificate (VHF) Course

It is a legal requirement that at least one person aboard a craft fitted with a VHF radio holds a VHF licence.

We offer the RYA one-day SRC Short Range Certificate (VHF) Course in two formats:
