Please contact us for dates

Existing powerboat instructors wishing to teach the advanced course must hold that level of certificate themselves, gained by taking the two day course. Additionally it is recommended that they have completed the Advanced Exam. The advanced instructor course lasts two days and the minimum age is 17 and is run by an RYA Powerboat Trainer.

RYA Advanced Powerboat Instructor endorsement
This course is open to PBIs with a suitable level of knowledge and experience. APBIs are able to teach the Intermediate (Powerboat Day Cruising) course in addition to the Advanced Course. You cannot teach Safety Boat unless you hold that qualification as well.

Entry Requirements
As an Advanced Instructor your students will generally be more experienced boaters so you need to be able to identify where their weaknesses are and teach them how to improve, a skill that requires the instructor to have more ability than their student.

Pre-course experience

Existing PBI with a suitable level of knowledge and experience. Advanced certificate holder.

Assumed knowledge Candidates should have a thorough knowledge of navigation and chart work to the level of Day Skipper shore based certificate and MUST hold a 1st aid certificate and a VHF operators certificate.
Minimum duration 2 days including a night exercise.
Minimum age 17 years
Course content

Since you are already an instructor, you should be comfortable with the teaching element, so the course aims to test and improve you in all areas. The Course Trainer will be aiming to develop each session so that you get all of the points across in the time available.

Ability after the course

To be able to instruct the Advanced Powerboat and Intermediate Powerboat courses under the supervision of the Principal of an RYA Training Centre.

Course outcomes
Passing the course is everyone’s intention, however if you require additional time in a particular area then we may set an action plan that would require additional work before you can become a fully fledged APBI.

NOTE: if you will be teaching the advanced course on board a boat that is subject to the MCA's codes of practice, you should hold a commercially endorsed advanced powerboat certificate.
