RYA Advanced Powerboat Course - £350.00 InclusiveThe Advanced Powerboat course is aimed at the more experienced powerboat handler. Run over 2 days and an evening (night exercise), the Advanced Powerboat course as well as being challenging and fun also focuses on the role of a skipper on a powerboat.
| Pre-course experience | Candidates should be competent to the standard of Intermediate Powerboat. |
| Assumed knowledge | Candidates should have a thorough knowledge of navigation and chart work to the level of Day Skipper shore based certificate and MUST hold a 1st aid certificate and a VHF operators certificate. |
| Minimum duration | 2 days including a night exercise |
| Minimum age | 17 years |
| Course content |
Preparation: passage planning, meteorology, safety and the skipper’s responsibilities. Boat handling and manoeuvres: high speed handling, pilotage by day and night, emergency situations including search patterns, awareness of chart plotters and Radar. |
| Ability after the course | To be able to drive a planing powerboat safely by day and night in tidal coastal waters with which the candidate may be familiar. |

In preparation for your course or as an after course aide memoire, Jon, in conjunction with the RYA has produced a DVD on more advanced powerboat handling techniques. It takes the viewer through the preparations required to take a RIB or sportsboat out to sea and comprehensively teaches skills such as turning, speeding up and holding station. It also offers guidance on scenarios such as coping with rougher weather and man overboard procedures in a clear and authoritative manner.
RYA/MCA Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence Prep £350.00
An examination for the Advanced Power certificate which can lead to gaining the commercial endorsement. This is a practical exam lasting between lasting 4-5 hours for one candidate and up to 7 hours for 2 or 3 candidates.Pre-exam experience: 2 years relevant experience including night pilotage. As a guide: 30 days, 2 days as skipper, 800 miles and 12 night hours. All candidates for the exam must hold the VHF/DSC operators and a valid 1st Aid certificate prior to the exam. The exam fee is additional at £168 and is payable direct to the examiner. If the Advanced Powerboat course completion certificate is held then the requirements reduce to 20 days, 2 days as skipper, 400 miles and 12 night hours.To have the Advanced certificate commercial endorsed, the candidate must also hold a sea survival certificate and undergo a medical examination.
